Jaya Bachchan in Rajya Sabha: A Showdown Leads to Opposition Walkout
New Delhi: On Friday afternoon, a significant event unfolded in the Rajya Sabha as opposition parties, led by Congress leader Sonia Gandhi, staged a walkout in a powerful show of support for Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan. The protest came in response to a repeated instance of what has become known as the ‘Jaya Amitabh Bachchan’ row in the Upper House.
Jaya Bachchan, a prominent actor and four-time Samajwadi Party MP, has expressed strong disapproval after being introduced in Parliament as ‘Jaya Amitabh Bachchan’ on two occasions during this session. She has made it clear that she finds this practice disrespectful.
Following the walkout, Jaya Bachchan spoke to reporters, describing the incident as “a humiliating experience.” She criticized the treatment of opposition MPs, contrasting it with the leniency often extended to those from the ruling BJP. “Whatever is said from the Chair… is allowed. Outside the Chair, the individual is like us.. an MP. I objected to the tone used by the Chair. We are not school children and some of us are even senior citizens. I was upset with the tone… especially when the Leader of the Opposition (Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge) stood up to speak, he (the Chair) switched the mike off…” she remarked.
Bachchan further expressed her frustration with the use of derogatory language in Parliament, stating, “Every time words that are unparliamentary are used… like ‘nuisance’, like ‘you may be a celebrity but I don’t care’. I am not asking him to care! Nobody has ever spoken the way they do now in Parliament. What is the problem? It is so disrespectful to women.”
The tipping point came this afternoon when, after a repeat of the ‘Jaya Amitabh Bachchan’ call-out, Ms. Bachchan objected once again. In response, Rajya Sabha Chairperson Jagdeep Dhankhar dismissed her concerns with a curt, “Don’t school me.” Unfazed, Bachchan stood her ground, demanding an apology. “I need an apology from the Chair,” she asserted as opposition MPs’ protests grew louder, ultimately leading to their walkout.
Outside Parliament, Sonia Gandhi and other opposition leaders, including Trinamool Congress’ Derek O’Brien, gathered around Ms. Bachchan in a significant show of solidarity. Several leaders spoke on her behalf, emphasizing the need for respect in parliamentary discourse. Congress communications chief Jairam Ramesh highlighted the repeated instances of opposition MPs being insulted and silenced in Parliament. Shiv Sena (UBT)’s Priyanka Chaturvedi pointed out that Ms. Bachchan has “vast parliamentary experience… more than the Vice President,” while Trinamool Congress MP Dola Sen stressed that as a four-time MP, Jaya Bachchan deserves respect.
