Rachael Gunn, known in the breakdancing world as “Raygun,” was born in Hornsby, New South Wales. She developed a passion for dance early on, training in various styles including ballroom, tap, and jazz during her childhood.
Gunn pursued higher education at Macquarie University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in contemporary music, graduating in 2009. She later returned to Macquarie University for a PhD in cultural studies, which she completed in 2017. Her doctoral thesis explored “the intersection of gender and Sydney’s breaking culture,” highlighting her academic interest in the cultural aspects of breakdancing.

Raygun began her breakdancing journey in the early 2010s, entering the scene in her mid-20s. She took a break from competing to focus on completing her PhD but made a strong return to the competitive circuit in 2018. She is coached by her husband, Samuel Free, and trains rigorously for three to four hours each day.

Raygun has represented Australia in several international competitions, including the 2021 World Breaking Championships in Paris, the 2022 World Breaking Championships in Seoul, and the 2023 World Breaking Championships in Leuven, Belgium. In 2023, she achieved a significant milestone by winning the Oceania Breaking Championships, earning her a spot in the 2024 Summer Olympics.
At the 2024 Summer Olympics, Raygun faced a tough competition and was eliminated in the round-robin stage without receiving any points from the judges. Despite the setback and facing harassment on social media, she remained resilient, sharing an empowering message on Instagram: “Don’t be afraid to be different, go out there and represent yourself, you never know where that’s gonna take you.”
