Death, Missing, and Injured
At least 256 people have tragically lost their lives and over 200 have been injured following massive landslides in the hilly regions near Meppadi in Wayanad, Kerala. The disaster struck after heavy rains triggered three significant landslides in the area, affecting villages such as Mundakkai, Chooralmala, Attamala, and Noolpuzha.
Rescue operations are ongoing, with around 1,000 people already rescued by the Army. However, 220 people are still reported missing. To coordinate the rescue and relief efforts, a Command and Control Centre has been established in Kozhikode by the Army, which has deployed around 1,500 personnel for the operation. Forensic surgeons are also on the ground to assist with the grim task of identifying the deceased.
This tragic event underscores the severity of the monsoon season in Kerala and the urgent need for effective disaster management and mitigation strategies.

Government Response:
The government has been actively involved in rescue and relief operations. They have set up numerous relief camps to accommodate the affected families, with around 10,000 people taking shelter in these facilities. Emergency services, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), have been deployed to aid in rescue and recovery efforts. The state government also issued alerts and warnings to other districts to prevent further loss of life due to potential landslides or flooding​

Wayanad landslide: The Congress leaders reached the spot, and then left for the Community Health Centre in Meppadi, said party sources.
Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and MP from Wayanad, along with his sister Priyanka Gandhi, visited the landslide-affected area of Chooralmala in Wayanad. Their visit was aimed at assessing the situation and expressing solidarity with the affected communities.
After visiting the site, they proceeded to the Community Health Centre in Meppadi to meet with the medical staff and victims receiving treatment. They also planned to visit Dr. Moopen’s Medical College and two relief camps in Meppadi to interact with the displaced residents and discuss relief efforts. Their presence highlights the severity of the situation and the need for comprehensive support and assistance to the affected areas.
